Domaćinstvo se sastoji od jedne ili više osoba koje žive u istom domu i imaju zajedničke obroke. Takođe se može sastojati od jedne porodice ili druge grupe ljudi.[1] Smatra se da stan sadrži više domaćinstava ako se obroci ili životni prostori nisu zajednički. Domaćinstvo je osnovna jedinica analize u mnogim socijalnim, mikroekonomskim i državnim modelima, i važno je za ekonomiju i nasleđe.[2]
Modeli domaćinstava uključuju porodice, mešane porodice, zajedničko stanovanje, grupne domove, pansione, kuće sa višestrukim posedom (UK) i jednokrevetne stanove (US). U feudalnim društvima, kraljevsko domaćinstvo i srednjovekovna domaćinstva bogatih uključivali su poslugu i drugo osoblje.
Vladine definicije
U statističke svrhe u Ujedinjenom Kraljevstvu, domaćinstvo je definisano kao „jedna osoba ili grupa ljudi kojima je smeštaj jedino ili glavno prebivalište, a grupa, ili deli bar jedan obrok dnevno ili deli životni smeštaj, odnosno dnevnu sobu ili sedeću sobu.”[3] Uvođenje zakona o kontroli kuća višestrukog smeštaja u britanskom Zakonu o stanovanju (2004)[4] zahtevalo je strožu definiciju jednog domaćinstva. Ljudi se mogu smatrati domaćinstvom ako su u srodstvu: puno- ili polu-krvno, hranitelj, pastor/dete, tazbina (i ekvivalent za nevenčane parove), bračni par ili nevenčani ali „koji žive kao ...“ (istopolni ili različitopolni parovi).[5]
Definicija popisa Sjedinjenih Država takođe zavisi od „odvojenih stambenih prostorija“: „onih u kojima stanari žive i jedu odvojeno od bilo koje druge osobe u zgradi.“[6] Prema američkom popisu stanovništva, domaćin je „osoba (ili jedan od ljudi) u čije ime je stambena jedinica u vlasništvu ili u najmu (održavanju)“; ako nijedno lice ne ispunjava uslove, bilo koji punoletni stanovnik stambene jedinice smatra se domaćinom. Američka vlada ranije je koristila „nosioca domaćinstva“ i „glavu porodice“, ali su ti izrazi zamenjeni terminom „domaćin“ 1980.[7]
